We recently spent an incredible week in Norway, a country that had been at the top of our travel list for years.
With its jaw-dropping landscapes and idyllic towns, it was an unforgettable adventure. Though we had limited time and budget, we crafted a near-perfect itinerary for first-time visitors. Here's everything we did!
A Chaotic Start
Our trip began with a 6.5-hour train ride from Oslo to Bergen, known as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. However, Norway's worst storm in 25 years had disrupted the usually impeccable public transport system. This led to a chaotic mix of trains, buses, and unexpected stops.
Arriving in Bergen
Dear Lykkers, by the time we reached Bergen in the late afternoon, we were exhausted. We freshened up and took a quick walk through Bryggen, the historic harbor area with colorful wooden buildings. A reindeer hot dog at Trekroneren for £8 was a unique and affordable dinner.
Hardangerfjord Cruise
The highlight of the day was a cruise on Hardangerfjord, often called the "Queen of the Fjords." The scenery was phenomenal—crystal-clear lakes, waterfalls, and towering cliffs.
Exploring Eidfjord
In Eidfjord, we skipped the expensive waterfall tour (£50+) and instead explored the charming village. A hidden beach, a wood maker’s workshop, and the stunning surroundings made it feel like a fairytale.
Mount Floyen
In the afternoon, we headed to Mount Floyen. While enjoying stunning views along the way. The summit offered panoramic vistas of Bergen, but it was crowded since we visited on a sunny Saturday.
Viking Valley
A bus ride to Gudvangen brought us to the Viking Valley, a living Viking village where you can try axe throwing and archery. It’s an immersive experience and perfect for history enthusiasts.
Fjord Cruise to Flam
From Gudvangen, we cruised through Naeroyfjord and Aurlandsfjord to Flam. Though the weather was initially rainy, the skies cleared as we approached Flam, revealing its stunning beauty.
Stegastein Viewpoint
Driving to the Stegastein viewpoint was thrilling, with winding roads and breathtaking views. This popular attraction offers a panoramic view of the fjord and mountains.
Relaxing in Flam
We spent the afternoon enjoying Flam’s quiet charm, visiting the railway museum, and savoring pastries from the Flam Bakery. Our stay at the Flam guesthouse, with its panoramic fjord views, was worth the splurge.
