Hello, Lykkers! Chicago was buzzing with excitement this week as Connor Bedard, the talented center for the Chicago Blackhawks, spent time inspiring young hockey enthusiasts.

Bedard was at the grand opening of a new outdoor ball hockey rink, a project made possible through the combined efforts of the NHL, the Blackhawks, and the Boys & Girls Club.

The rink, built as part of the NHL Legacy initiative tied to the upcoming Winter Classic, brought together over 100 kids from the local Boys & Girls Club for an unforgettable experience.

Inspiring Moments on the Rink

Despite the cold weather, the young players hit the rink with enthusiasm, eager to play ball hockey alongside the 19-year-old NHL star. Bedard, known for his remarkable skills and being the top pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, embraced the opportunity to connect with the children.

“They’re definitely locking -me up out there,” Bedard joked, referring to their competitive spirit. “It’s incredible to see their energy and how much they’re enjoying the game. That’s what hockey is all about—having fun and learning.”

This initiative aligns with the NHL Legacy program’s mission to give back to communities hosting major events. Since 2003, the program has contributed more than $8 million to projects aimed at supporting youth, hospital patients, and increased access to hockey.

A Rink for the Community

Jaime Faulkner, president of business operations for the Blackhawks, emphasized the importance of the project for Chicago’s west side. “This community is where we live and work. To see partnerships come together and create something so impactful is truly special,” Faulkner shared.

The new rink is designed to serve the community year-round, offering more than just hockey. It can host basketball games, soccer matches, and other activities, making it a versatile hub for recreation.

Additionally, the Blackhawks and the NHL have donated 200 tickets for the upcoming Winter Classic to local organizations. This ensures that members of the community who might not have the opportunity to attend such events can enjoy the game. “This is about making hockey accessible to everyone,” Faulkner added.

Excitement for the Winter Classic

As the Blackhawks prepare to face the St. Louis Blues at Wrigley Field, excitement continues to grow. The Winter Classic is more than just a game—it’s a week-long celebration of hockey, complete with youth programs and community events.

Connor Bedard’s involvement in the rink opening showcases his dedication to inspiring the next generation of players. “We want these kids to love hockey as much as we do,” he said. “This rink is a great start for that journey.”

As the Winter Classic approaches, Chicago is not only celebrating the game but also creating a legacy of inclusivity, community, and passion for hockey.
