Hey Lykkers! Are you ready to explore a city where ancient history meets modern innovation?
Baku is bursting with energy, and we're thrilled to share our journey with you. From its remarkable architecture to vibrant street life, there's so much to experience in Azerbaijan's fascinating capital.
One of Baku's most striking landmarks is the Flame Towers, a trio of skyscrapers designed to resemble flames. As the tallest buildings in Azerbaijan, these towers light up the skyline with a breathtaking LED display that's visible from almost anywhere in the city. Watching these illuminated towers flicker at night is unforgettable and a must-see when we're in Baku. The Flame Towers don't require tickets, but if we want a closer view, we can head to the nearby Highland Park for a perfect vantage point. Opening hours: Open daily, 24 hours (viewing from Highland Park); Ticket price: Free for Highland Park.
Baku's Old City, or "Icherisheher," is the historical heart of the city, where every step feels like traveling back in time. Walking through its narrow stone streets, we come across charming shops, local art, and even a few hidden cafes. We explored the Maiden Tower, one of Baku's oldest structures, and climbed up for a stunning view of the city. It's fascinating to wander in a place that's over a thousand years old, filled with stories and cultural treasures. Opening hours for Maiden Tower: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily; Ticket price: Approximately 10 AZN (about 6 USD).
When planning a trip to Baku, a few practical tips can go a long way. Currency in Baku is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN), and although some places may accept cards, it's wise to carry cash for smaller purchases in the Old City. Transportation options include taxis, which are generally affordable, but we also found that using the metro system was a convenient way to get around. Language is primarily Azerbaijani, but many people in tourist areas speak a little English, so it's easy to navigate. For weather, spring and autumn are ideal times to visit, with comfortable temperatures and clear skies that make exploring the city enjoyable.
We loved discovering Baku's dining scene, where a variety of dishes showcase Azerbaijan's unique culinary flavors. While enjoying traditional meals, we noticed that tea is an essential part of the dining experience, often served with sweets. From cozy cafes in the Old City to modern restaurants, the variety is bound to excite any food lover. And don't miss out on the local fresh fruit and vegetable markets—they're great for snacks on the go and a glimpse into local life.
Baku's Seaside Boulevard is the perfect spot to wind down after a busy day. Strolling along this long promenade, we felt the refreshing sea breeze and took in the view of the Flame Towers and the Caspian Sea. With fountains, small parks, and occasional performances by street musicians, the boulevard is lively and scenic, making it an ideal place to relax and watch the city lights come alive. Best of all, it's free and open to everyone, day and night.
Exploring Baku is a journey through contrasts—where history meets the future, and the energy of a modern city merges with ancient charm. Lykkers, if you're looking for a travel experience that's equal parts culture, adventure, and relaxation, Baku is calling!
