During our recent trip to London, one of the highlights was walking across the iconic Millennium Bridge.
Connecting St. Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe, this pedestrian suspension bridge offers stunning views of the River Thames and the city skyline.
Completed in 2000, the Millennium Bridge quickly gained fame for its sleek design and modern architecture. We marveled at how the bridge sways gently with the movement of pedestrians, which initially led to some concerns about its stability, earning it the nickname "the Wobbly Bridge." Fortunately, it has since been reinforced, allowing us to cross with confidence while taking in the breathtaking views.
Once we reached the southern end of the bridge, we found ourselves surrounded by incredible attractions. Just a short walk away is the Tate Modern, one of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries. Entry to the permanent collections is free, though some special exhibitions do require tickets, typically around £16. The gallery is open from 10 AM to 6 PM every day, making it a perfect spot to dive into modern art after our bridge stroll.
Just a stone’s throw from the Tate is Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, where we learned about the Bard's life and works. Tours are available for about £17, and the theater itself offers performances throughout the summer months, with tickets starting at around £5 for standing spots. We couldn’t resist the chance to step into this reconstructed Elizabethan theater and imagine the vibrant performances that once graced its stage.
Before heading out, we made sure to check the weather since London can be unpredictable. A light jacket was perfect for the cool breeze over the river. If you’re planning to visit, aim for a weekday to avoid crowds, especially if you want to enjoy a leisurely walk and take plenty of photos.
After exploring, we worked up quite an appetite. Nearby, we discovered Borough Market, a food lover's paradise. We sampled delicious dishes, including a hearty vegetarian curry from a stall called “Roti King” for about £8. Their crispy roti paired with a spicy chickpea curry was the perfect fuel for our afternoon of exploration. We also tried some sweet and savory pastries at “Bread Ahead,” where a delectable doughnut filled with salted caramel costs around £3.50.
For a quick snack, we couldn’t resist the famous fish and chips from “The Fish! Kitchen,” which set us back £10. The crispy batter and fluffy chips were a quintessential London experience.
Lykkers, Crossing the Millennium Bridge was not just a walk; it was a gateway to some of London’s most vibrant cultural spots. Whether it was the art at Tate Modern or the historic charm of Shakespeare’s Globe, the area around the bridge has something for everyone. Plus, with delicious local food to try, our day was a perfect blend of sightseeing and savoring the best flavors London has to offer.
So if you're planning a trip to London, make sure to include the Millennium Bridge in your itinerary. It’s more than just a crossing; it’s an experience that connects you to the heart of this incredible city. Happy travels!
